A painter’s renewed energy alarms his wife as he becomes increasingly restless and resists treatment.
The story
Damien is a renowned painter whose career is managed by gallery owner Serge. He regularly experiences bipolar disorder and has previously been treated in hospital. During a seaside vacation, Damien feels “good” again, but his wife, Leïla, worries that this apparent upswing may be too much and is concerned about the stability of their young son, Amine. Damien becomes hyperactive, stops sleeping, unsettles the people around him, behaves incoherently, and resists taking his medication. At the same time, his feverish inspiration drives him to keep painting, canvas after canvas.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Damien, a renowned painter whose career is managed by his gallery owner, Serge, regularly suffers from bipolar disorder. He has been treated in hospital before, and during a seaside vacation he feels “good” again—too good, in the eyes of his wife, Leïla, who is also concerned about the stability of their little boy, Amine. Soon, gripped by hyperactivity, Damien stops sleeping, unsettles those around him, acts incoherently, and is reluctant to take his medication. Yet, feverish and inspired, he paints. Canvas after canvas.
