A forest ranger’s knowledge of the woods challenges a police captain’s theory about a contractor’s death.
The story
Julie Meyer, a forest ranger with the National Forest Office, is attuned to the sounds of the forest she cares for. During her rounds, she discovers the body of a forestry contractor and concludes from her knowledge of the woods that it has been moved. Though the local gendarmerie supports her, she struggles to persuade Captain Masson of the Strasbourg Judicial Police, who has been assigned the case by an investigating judge. Masson believes the death is tied to large-scale drug trafficking. As Julie and the captain begin working together, she also notices how little attention he gives to nature and to his teenage daughter, Louison.
