A celebrated Parisian princess searching for passionate love finds herself drawn to a writer whose moral convictions may challenge her reputation.

The story

In Paris during the 1820s and 1830s, the Princess of Cadignan moves from one lover to another with the freedom of a Don Juan, unconcerned by society’s judgment. Beneath this reputation, however, she regrets never having known passionate love. Her friend, the Marquise d’Espard, introduces her to Daniel d’Arthez, a celebrated writer who awakens love in her for the first time. As the princess falls deeply for him, his devotion to Christian morality raises the question of how he might respond to her reputation.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Princess of Cadignan, one of the queens of Paris in the 1820s and 1830s, behaves like a Don Juan, enjoying the same freedom as she moves from one lover to another without caring what people will say. However, she regrets never having experienced passionate love. Her friend, the Marquise d’Espard, introduces her to Daniel d’Arthez, a great writer who, for the first time, awakens love in her. The princess realizes that she loves d’Arthez deeply. But he is devoted to Christian morality. Although he falls completely under the princess’s spell, he may react very badly when he is told of the reputation of the woman he loves—a woman who is almost considered a courtesan by the society he moves in. Yet, surprisingly, d’Arthez reacts quite differently from what one might expect when he learns the “secrets of the princess.”
