The story

Céline, a free-spirited young woman whose beatnik lifestyle has included a string of affairs, unexpectedly falls for Philippe Aignan, a wealthy businessman, and agrees to marry him. She soon finds bourgeois life and its social events stifling and boring. As she struggles to fit into her husband’s world, Céline grows close to Julia, the wife of one of Philippe’s associates. The two women connect over a plan to co-write a book about sexual mores, offering Céline a friendship and a creative purpose beyond the life she has entered through marriage.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Céline, a free-spirited young woman, meets Philippe Aignan, a wealthy businessman, and, against all expectations, falls for him and agrees to become his wife, despite having previously collected only affairs in keeping with her beatnik lifestyle. Bourgeois life and social events quickly bore her, and she grows close to Julia, the wife of one of her husband's associates. The two friends plan to co-write a book about sexual mores when Julia dies in a car accident foolishly caused by her husband. This immediately prompts Céline to break with Philippe and with a world that will never be hers.
