A cashier's anonymous blog about her difficult working life draws coworkers into a movement and attracts an undercover reporter.
The story
Solweig, a young supermarket cashier, spends her days facing rude customers and a cruel, lecherous manager. Underpaid and looked down on, she depends on the job after her father falls into a coma: she has paused her studies to become a literature teacher and is raising her little brother, Anatole. Her fellow cashiers support one another, and Solweig privately writes a blog about their working lives. As her coworkers recognize themselves in its posts, the blog begins to inspire a wider social movement. A celebrity magazine, hoping to exploit the growing phenomenon, sends a reporter undercover to the supermarket to discover who is writing it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Solweig (Déborah François), a young cashier who is always smiling at a supermarket, spends all day dealing with customers who are sometimes rude and unpleasant, as well as with her bosses—especially Mercier (Jean-Luc Couchard), a petty, mean-spirited, sadistic and lecherous manager. Underpaid, looked down on and sometimes depressed, the women—Leila (Alice Belaïdi), Marie (Elsa Zylberstein), Sandy (Firmine Richard) and all the others—at least have one another’s backs and stick together. Socially downtrodden, Solweig needs this job. Since her father fell into a coma, she has had to put her studies to become a literature teacher on hold and raise her little brother Anatole on her own. Outraged by what she sees, hears and has to put up with all day, she secretly keeps a blog to escape, if only a little, from this sometimes sordid world. Every evening, she writes about her daily life as a cashier. Her fellow workers see themselves in the blog, which is beginning to spark a nationwide social movement among these 650,000 women pompously dubbed “checkout hostesses,” who are in fact an underclass of workers at the mercy of their employers. Hoping to boost its circulation by capitalizing on this phenomenon, a celebrity magazine sends one of its reporters to get hired undercover as a cashier and find out who writes the blog. By chance, she ends up at the very supermarket where Solweig works. Too trusting, Solweig is soon unmasked. One snowy winter evening, Solweig runs into Charles (Nicolas Giraud) in the street. He is a young man from a well-to-do family, with a Rolls-Royce and a chauffeur, and he is performing in The Cid at the theater. Will the two, struck by love at first sight during this brief encounter, manage to find each other again and unite their destinies?
