As Galba weighs two senators as his successor, Otho seeks the consul Vinius’s support—but Vinius makes it conditional on a marriage strategy.
The story
In Rome at the beginning of 69, aging Emperor Galba has no heir and must choose a successor between senators Piso and Otho. Otho, once a favorite of the previous emperor Nero, seeks the support of consul Vinius. Vinius agrees to back him if Otho follows his strategy: first seek the hand of Camilla, Galba’s niece, rather than Plautina, Galba’s daughter, whom Otho loves.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Rome, at the beginning of the year 69, the aging Emperor Galba, having no heir, must choose his successor from among the senators Piso and Otho. The latter, once a favorite of the previous emperor, Nero, seeks the support of the consul Vinius, who agrees to back him if he follows his strategy: first asking for the hand of Camilla, Galba’s niece, rather than that of his daughter Plautina, with whom he is in love. Otho agrees just as Galba chooses Piso and gives his niece to him in marriage. But the army rebels against Galba, and Otho is proclaimed emperor without being forced to marry anyone.
