A young woman's decision to answer a decades-old letter to Juliet leads her on a journey to help an elderly woman find her long-lost love.

The story

Sophie, a fact checker for The New Yorker, travels to Verona, Italy, on a pre-honeymoon with her fiancé Victor. While exploring the city, she discovers the tradition of 'letters to Juliet' and joins the group of 'Secretaries of Juliet' who answer them. She finds an unanswered letter from 1957 written by a girl named Claire Smith seeking advice on her love for a man named Lorenzo. Sophie decides to answer the letter, leading to the arrival of the now-elderly Claire and her grandson, Charlie. The trio sets off on a quest to find Claire's long-lost love while Sophie and Charlie begin to develop their own connection.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sophie, a New York fact checker, travels to Verona with her fiancé Victor, who is preoccupied with his new restaurant. While there, she joins the 'Secretaries of Juliet' and answers a 1957 letter from Claire Smith, who stood up her lover, Lorenzo Bartolini. The elderly Claire arrives with her grandson, Charlie, and they embark on a search for Lorenzo. During the journey, Sophie and Charlie grow closer. After finding one deceased Lorenzo, they eventually discover a young man who looks like Lorenzo at a vineyard owned by the Bartolini family. Claire is reunited with Lorenzo, and the group shares a meal with his family. Back in New York, Sophie breaks up with Victor after his lack of passion. She returns to Verona for Claire and Lorenzo's wedding. During the reception, Sophie runs out crying after a misunderstanding involving Charlie and a woman named Patricia. Charlie reveals Patricia is his cousin, and he confesses his love for Sophie. He attempts to climb a vine to her balcony, recreating a famous scene from Romeo and Juliet, but falls, and they kiss as he lies on the ground.
