The story
Norwegian architect Agnes Wallem travels to a coastal town on the Sognefjord to present her first major commission: a community center designed to fit beside an old stave church. Agnes had left Kristian, but came to realize he was the man with whom she wanted a life and family; now he and Luisa are a family with little Mia. Agnes wonders why Luisa chose her for the commission as she and Kristian grow close again. Luisa seems to welcome their renewed closeness, while Kristian suspects his wife is having an affair.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Norwegian architect Agnes Wallem, who recently set up her own practice, has to travel to a coastal town for a presentation connected with her first major commission. There, on the Sognefjord, she is to design a community center that will fit in with the stave church next door, one of the most beautiful and oldest in the country. When Agnes attends a reception in her honor, she recognizes the mayor, Luisa Storstein, as the woman because of whom Kristian, the shipbuilding engineer she loved deeply, did not come back to her. Agnes had left Kristian, mistakenly believing she still had something to search for, but soon realized that Kristian was the man she wanted to spend her life with and start a family with. Now he, Luisa, and little Mia are the family she wanted to have with him. Agnes wonders why Luisa chose her in particular for the commission. Even the fact that Agnes and Kristian are growing close again seems not to bother Luisa—in fact, she seems to welcome it. Kristian, however, is unsettled and believes his wife is having an affair. His suspicions seem supported by the fact that she goes to appointments she does not talk about and is away quite often, even overnight. After an excursion into the mountains, where there are ancient rock paintings that Agnes wants to incorporate into the new building, she and Kristian sleep together. Afterwards, however, they decide that they cannot turn back time and that each must live their own life, though they still want to meet one last time. But on that day, the neurologist Jonas Tjersland, with whom Agnes has been in a relationship for some time, turns up. He quickly realizes that something is wrong with Agnes and seeks to talk to her. A little later, when Kristian celebrates his birthday, Agnes and Jonas are among the guests. There is tension between Jonas and Kristian, and also between Jonas and Agnes. Jonas decides to leave and head back. The next day, Agnes sees Luisa collapse on the steps of the stave church. After Agnes presses her, Luisa tells her that she is gravely ill and will die. She assures Agnes that she wants her to get back together with Kristian; Agnes is the woman he has always loved. Agnes tells Kristian everything, and he rushes home at once. But Luisa is not there. A hunch sends Kristian and Agnes hurrying into the mountains. Luisa is standing on a rocky ledge above the fjord, determined to jump, but Kristian manages to pull her back just in time. Perhaps she will now go ahead with the operation her doctors recommended, which offers hope of a cure. Kristian and little Mia need her. From aboard the ship, Agnes calls Jonas and says she would like to come home, if that would be all right with him; if so, she would very much like to come home.
