The story
In autumn 1989, 19-year-old Franziska “Franzi” Schubert moves into a cheap apartment beside the Berlin Wall at the Heinrich-Heine-Straße crossing to study social work in West Berlin. Returning from East Berlin with groceries, she tears her shopping bag at the border. East German guard Sascha Meier helps her; he has agreed to serve three years in the National People’s Army in exchange for a place at medical school. The pair begin communicating through messages left on a signboard and arrange to meet in the eastern part of the city. As their relationship grows across the divided city, they face pressure from authorities on both sides.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the autumn of 1989, 19-year-old Franziska “Franzi” Schubert moves into an inexpensive apartment in an old building by the Wall, at the Heinrich-Heine-Straße border crossing, to begin studying social work in West Berlin. One day, as she returns from East Berlin with groceries, her shopping bag tears right at the border crossing. East German border guard Sascha Meier rushes to help her. He has committed to serving three years in the National People’s Army in exchange for a place at medical school. The two arrange to meet at the Alex by writing messages on a signboard, then set up further meetings in the eastern part of the city and begin a long-distance relationship across the Wall—but not without consequences: both the Stasi and the CIA threaten to imprison them unless they spy on each other and report back from East and West, respectively.
