After her sister’s death brings a determined young niece and a run-down lakeside inn into her life, Paula’s wish to help clashes with her husband’s plans for the property.

The story

Paula Markmann has lost considerable weight, but her husband, real-estate agent Kurt, still calls her “Chubby” and has not noticed the change. Her attention turns to her sister’s sudden death. At the funeral proceedings, Paula learns that Barbara had a daughter, Maggie, around the same age as Paula and Kurt’s son. The estate includes the run-down “Zum Schwan” inn and adjoining residence, the childhood home of Paula and Barbara. Maggie is determined to renovate and reopen the inn, and Paula wants to support her. Kurt, meanwhile, sees the attractive lakeside property as an opportunity for a profitable deal with a hotel chain.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Paula Markmann, who is married to real estate agent Kurt, really dislikes her husband always calling her “Chubby.” Now that she has lost a considerable amount of weight and can once again fit into almost the same clothing size she wore twenty years ago, she finds the nickname especially inappropriate. Unfortunately, Kurt has not even noticed her transformation. Then the sudden death of her sister claims Paula’s full attention. The funeral proceedings reveal that Barbara had a daughter named Maggie. The girl is about the same age as Paula and Kurt’s son, Daniel. The estate consists of the run-down “Zum Schwan” inn and the adjoining residence. It is the childhood home of Paula and Barbara. Maggie is determined to renovate the inn and reopen it. Paula is impressed by the young woman’s determination. The inn sits on a beautiful property right beside a picturesque lake. This catches Kurt’s interest, since the property could be used to strike a deal with a hotel chain, bringing in a substantial profit if his plan works out. Paula still does not know that her husband has long been having a secret relationship with Verena, his much younger fitness instructor. Since Paula wants to support Maggie’s plans, Kurt sees his own plans threatened and is determined to come up with something.
