Full plot (contains spoilers)

Robert Kant, an extremely successful architect, plans to fly to Shanghai on business with his future wife, his boss’s daughter. But shortly before the plane is due to depart, he realizes that he has forgotten his passport. In a frantic attempt to retrieve it, he takes the rental car offered to him by a Chinese man named Cheng and speeds off in it. Then he causes a serious accident, destroying an entire carload of valuable ceramics belonging to potter Teresa Blümel. She gives first aid and immediately tries to get his personal details for the insurance claim, because without the compensation she expects, she would be ruined. But Robert Kant has lost his memory and cannot help her. The police learn that the rental car was most recently rented by the aforementioned Mr. Cheng, and so they take Robert Kant to be this Chinese man. Any doubts about his Chinese identity, prompted by his fluent German and European appearance, are dispelled by his profound knowledge of Chinese. Teresa Blümel eventually takes the amnesiac home with her, where he meets her children, who quickly come to see him as a father figure. Teresa and Robert gradually grow closer, and, despite some differences, their many things in common lead them to fall in love. When Robert Kant finds his missing wallet, containing his identity card, at the accident scene, and later recovers his memory, he could return to his old life and his fiancée, but he chooses Teresa instead.
