The story
Piet, a former owner of an upscale restaurant, loses his job after receiving a 23-month suspended sentence for tax evasion. His employment-agency caseworker makes him take a one-euro job at a Hamburg food bank. While delivering food, Piet encounters Veronika, his childhood sweetheart, now a successful auctioneer. He boasts about his former life, but she sees through him and gets him to invite her to his old restaurant; he tries to keep up the charade. They then decide to take the trip to Venice they had planned 20 years earlier.

Piet is a former owner of an upscale restaurant who lost his job after being given a 23-month suspended sentence for tax evasion. His caseworker at the employment agency forces him to take a one-euro job at the Hamburg food bank. While delivering food for the food bank, he runs into his childhood sweetheart, Veronika, who is now a successful auctioneer. Piet boasts about his former life, but Veronika quickly sees through him and gets him to invite her to his old restaurant. He tries to keep up the charade. Then they decide to take the trip to Venice that they had planned 20 years earlier. First they travel by truck, then with a Polish pilgrimage group. Finally, they travel to South Tyrol with a Dutch couple and their grandchildren. The two grow closer there, but then Piet sets off to retrieve one million Swiss francs from a bank safe-deposit box, disappointing Veronika. She leaves him and conducts an auction. Then Piet turns up, and the two set off together.
