A secretary’s two employers both propose marriage, turning her working life into a rivalry over who would make the better husband.

The story

Hanni Weber divides her days between two jobs: mornings as secretary to successful writer Wölfing and afternoons working for tenor Villanova. Her routine changes when Wölfing is commissioned to write The School of Marriage, a book about successful marriages, despite being unmarried. Believing marriage would make him seem more qualified, he proposes to Hanni. She refuses because she will not enter a mere marriage of convenience. Meanwhile, Villanova decides to abandon his Casanova ways and marry, and he too proposes to Hanni. When the two men discover they are rivals, each tries to convince her he would be the better prospective husband.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hanni Weber is a secretary who is constantly trying to keep both her bosses happy. In the mornings she works in the office of Wölfing, a successful writer, and in the afternoons for Villanova, a tenor. Thanks to the split schedule, she manages both jobs well. But one day, when Wölfing—who has already written a bestseller titled The School of Love—is asked to write a book called The School of Marriage, things become turbulent: Wölfing would first have to be married, since it would be considered unprofessional for an unmarried author to write a novel about successful marriages. Wölfing decides that the most obvious solution is simply to marry his secretary. He hastily proposes to her, but Hanni turns him down because she does not want to enter into a mere “marriage of convenience.” Things become even more tangled when her other boss, tenor Villanova, also decides to change his ways: he wants to give up his life as a Casanova and finally get married. As a result, Hanni receives a marriage proposal from him as well. When the two men find out that they are rivals, each does everything he can to appear, in Hanni’s eyes, to be the better prospective husband.
