A teenage girl's life spirals into tragedy after her mother abandons her in a former Soviet republic.

The story

Lilya Michailova, an adolescent girl living in a run-down apartment in a former Soviet republic, is abandoned by her mother who moves to the United States. Left in the care of an aunt who treats her poorly, Lilya faces a series of humiliations. After her reputation is ruined and she is raped by acquaintances, she is forced into prostitution to survive. Seeking a better life, she eventually moves to Sweden with a boyfriend, only to be imprisoned and forced into sexual slavery by a pimp.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film begins with a girl running towards a motorway bridge, introducing Lilya Michailova, a girl who has been badly beaten. After her mother abandons her for a new boyfriend in the US, Lilya's aunt moves into her mother's flat, forcing Lilya into a squalid apartment. Following a series of humiliations, including a ruined reputation and rape by acquaintances, Lilya enters prostitution. She forms a protective friendship with Volodya, a boy abused by his father. She eventually moves to Sweden with Andrei, but is instead enslaved by a pimp named Witek. Despondent, Volodya commits suicide and appears to Lilya as an angel. On Christmas, he offers her the world, which she rejects. After a failed escape and a beating, Lilya flees Malmö, terrified of deportation. She ends up on a bridge, where she jumps to her death. The film offers two endings: one where she is sent back in time and rejects Andrei's offer to live a happier life with Volodya, and another where she and Volodya are both angels playing basketball.
