The March sisters navigate the challenges of growing up in 19th-century New England while facing the trials of war and personal discovery.

The story

The March sisters—responsible Meg, tempestuous Jo, tender Beth, and romantic Amy—are growing up in Concord, Massachusetts during and after the American Civil War. With their father away serving as a chaplain and their strong-willed mother, Marmee, they struggle with various challenges in 19th-century New England. The girls find solace in performing plays in their attic theater. Their lives are intertwined with their neighbor, the wealthy Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, who becomes a close friend to the sisters, particularly Jo. As the girls navigate their differing ambitions and the hardships of the era, they must find their own paths in a changing world.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—grow up in Concord, Massachusetts, during the American Civil War. While their father serves as a chaplain, they live with their mother, Marmee. Jo is an aspiring writer, Beth is a talented pianist, and Amy is a budding artist. Their lives are influenced by their neighbor, Laurie Laurence. When Mr. March is wounded, Jo sells her hair to fund his care. Beth contracts scarlet fever while helping a neighbor and is left weakened. Over several years, the sisters face various milestones: Meg marries John Brooke, and Beth's health declines. Jo moves to New York to pursue writing, where she meets Friedrich Bhaer. In Europe, Amy is reunited with a dissolute Laurie. After Beth passes away, Jo writes her life story. Amy and Laurie eventually marry and return home. Finally, Jo finds love and a future with Professor Bhaer after a misunderstanding about her marital status.
