Loft (2010)

Five married men from a decadent milieu secretly share a loft on the north side of the IJ, where they can receive their mistresses and latest conquests in style and in peace. The idea comes from Matthias (Barry Atsma), a self-assured architect who regularly cheats despite having a good marriage with Nathalie (Kim van Kooten). As the architect of the complex, he hands out the five keys to the vacant loft. The loft seems like a great arrangement until, one winter morning, they find the body of a young woman. All five men claim they do not know who she is, where she came from, or how she ended up in a loft for which only they have keys. Copies can only be made with a code that only Matthias has. The men discuss whether to alert the police. Their differing opinions about how to resolve the situation, and their attempts to pin the blame on someone, cause tempers to flare. The body turns out to be that of Sarah (Sallie Harmsen), the woman Matthias had been having a physical relationship with. The day before, he had ended things with her in the loft, leaving her there alive but deeply unhappy. One of the other four, Rob (Gijs Naber), Matthias's hapless right-hand man, has been secretly filming their adventures. The footage reveals that Matthias has used all his friends to get into bed with their loved ones: he took the virginity of Tom's (Chico Kenzari) sister Linda (Charlie Chan Dagelet), who was only 18. Tom is one of the five men, and his overprotectiveness, combined with a cocaine addiction, often escalates into physical violence. This has already led to his powerful father-in-law holding him in deep contempt, and to him raping a prostitute. Matthias also received oral sex from Annette (Lies Visschedijk), Willem's (Jeroen van Koningsbrugge) wife. She wanted revenge on Willem after a fling in Düsseldorf told her about her husband's infidelity. Her meeting with Matthias had been arranged by Willem himself, who hoped his best friend could persuade Annette not to leave him. Moreover, Matthias won the heart of Ann Marai (Anna Drijver), the mistress of Bart (Fedja van Huêt), a respected psychologist with a dark past. Bart falls head over heels in love with her and even gives her the key to the loft to prove his fidelity, something he later lies about to his friends. But Ann loves “someone else” (who turns out to be Matthias) and even admits she was initially paid to have sex with him. Rob convinces his friends to use Matthias as their fall guy, putting the exposure of the loft and its connection to the dead woman entirely on him. Earlier that morning, Tom had even slit her wrists to make her death look as much like suicide as possible. The entire conversation turns out to have been staged by the four men, who had already been told about the body earlier that day, to make their plan as watertight as possible. Matthias is drugged, placed in bed with Sarah, and left for the police to find. After the police determine that Sarah was murdered, Matthias becomes the prime suspect, aided by false testimony from his four friends. Bart feels guilty and goes looking for Sarah's farewell letter so he can tell the police the whole truth. When the letter seems to have vanished without a trace, he turns to Rob. Rob admits that he had secretly been in love with Sarah, but that she had rejected him after a party at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Not long afterward, he saw Matthias end the affair in the loft. After Matthias left, Rob gave Sarah a fatal dose of insulin out of revenge. However, according to the autopsy report, the wrists Tom cut later would have proved fatal. Realizing he has been exposed, Rob ends his life by jumping from the loft's balcony. One year later, Ann contacts Bart again and claims she has turned her life around. Finally, we are told that after his divorce Matthias has only the loft left, Willem and Annette are back together, and Tom is awaiting trial.
