An arranged marriage and the contrasting pregnancies of two women reveal sharply unequal lives.

The story

Pedro and Cristina, a married couple living amid comfort, elegance, luxury, and fashion, are expecting a child. Their pregnant friend Jackie shares their access to expert medical care and childbirth preparation. The couple hires Imelda, a young woman from the provinces, to help with cleaning. She also becomes pregnant, but her circumstances make the pregnancy a problem. Through the contrast between these women’s situations, the film presents another perspective on society and the unequal conditions surrounding pregnancy.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film depicts the various situations arising from the arranged marriage between Pedro and Cristina, who live in comfort and elegance, surrounded by luxury and fashion. In the story, Cristina is pregnant, as is her friend Jackie; they are cared for by one of the best specialists and do exercises to prepare for childbirth. At the same time, the couple hires Imelda, a young woman from the provinces, to help with the cleaning. Through Imelda’s story in the film, we see another perspective on society. She, too, becomes pregnant, but her condition is a problem, so she decides to have an abortion. Because she lacks sufficient knowledge, she puts her life at risk and ends up sterile. At the end of the story, we see an image with a certain touch of irony: Imelda ends up caring for her employer’s baby.
