The story
As his Europol exchange assignment in Portugal approaches its end, Hamburg police officer Leander Lost struggles with German bureaucracy because he wants to remain in Portugal with his foster daughter Zara and girlfriend Soraia. Meanwhile, investigators find a body at the scene of a break-in, and a child witness reports seeing a suspicious man, motorcycle and courier van. Colleague Duarte connects the murder to two killings in his hometown of Seville and travels there to investigate. The team keeps watch on a conspicuous motorcycle, which Zara’s boyfriend Toninho uses to collect a package while making deliveries for a petty criminal. The package contains white powder, drawing Lost into a case he cannot leave alone.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Europol exchange program that transferred Hamburg criminal police officer Leander Lost to Portugal is soon coming to an end. But Lost wants to stay in Portugal, to be with his foster daughter, Zara, and his girlfriend, Soraia. He therefore struggles unsuccessfully with German bureaucracy. Zara is currently completing her Bachillerato and wants to travel around with her boyfriend, Toninho, afterward. Soraia doesn’t ask Lost the right questions and wrongly concludes that he would leave her without a second thought. Called to the scene of a break-in, the police find a body with a feather pushed through the bullet wound in its eye. A neighbor’s child reports seeing a man in a brown suit leave the carpenter Ronneberg’s house through a window, as well as a red motorcycle, and later a courier van. The vain colleague Duarte spots similarities to two murders in his hometown of Seville and is sent there to investigate on the ground. The conspicuous motorcycle is repeatedly seen in a square, so the team keeps watch there. Toninho uses it to pick up a package. He makes deliveries for the petty criminal Fernando in order to buy a house for himself and Zara. Lost and Carlos Esteves confront him. Although the package contains a white powder, nobody wants to arrest Toninho. Lost cannot let the matter go and, knowing his colleagues’ tricks, takes some of the powder himself. That way, it can be detected in his hair even if it is switched. He says he feels no effects, which can certainly happen given the different brain chemistry of autistic people, but he delivers even more irritating monologues than usual. In recurring interludes, an older man is seen running a prison yard in Seville like a Mafia boss. A man in a brown suit breaks into an elderly woman’s home and strangles her when she returns. The investigators find witnesses who saw the courier van. But according to the courier company, neither crime scene was on the list of destinations to be visited. Since the murdered carpenter is the brother of the deputy chief of the Hamburg police, the latter sends Alexander Manz, a former colleague of Lost’s, to Portugal to assist the investigative team. Lost notices inconsistencies in the cases and suspects they were staged as a diversion to distract from the real killer. They find a link to an old case in which Pablo Delgado tried to smuggle 1.4 tons of cocaine into the country and was caught. He now seems to be taking revenge on the witnesses. Toninho goes to see Fernando to find out more about a large shipment. Fernando tells him to hide when three shady men arrive to collect signal flares for an airdrop. They want to take Fernando with them, and he recognizes Delgado’s son Salvador as one of the men. Suspecting that they intend to get rid of him, he draws his gun. They promise that a plane will take him out of the country, which convinces him. Fernando puts his gun down and is shot with it. Toninho sees everything and presses the alarm button Esteves gave him. As a result, Esteves has to explain to his colleagues that Toninho is an informant. Toninho runs and is pursued. When the police arrive, a shootout breaks out. Toninho is hit and taken to hospital. Delgado learns that Toninho survived and is in hospital. He orders him killed, but the hitman is expected. The criminal Montoya turns up at Lost’s home and makes it clear, using a video on his phone, that Zara has been kidnapped. If Lost wants to see her alive again, he must make sure that Toninho, a witness in one of the murder cases from Part 1, arrives alone at one of the salt pans at noon. And, of course, Lost must not tell his colleagues under any circumstances. Lost visits Toninho in hospital, and Toninho asks him about Zara. Lost has no choice but to tell him about the kidnapping and the ultimatum. Lost then informs Graciana and Esteves, observing almost paranoid security precautions. First, Lost and his colleagues stage a ruse, telling the press that Toninho has died of his injuries. They then manage to find out where the video was filmed. But Zara is no longer there. Every police unit is busy with the expected major drug shipment. Since nobody in the area knows Manz, he watches the harbor disguised as a tourist. When he learns that Lost has Asperger’s autism and therefore cannot lie, he persistently asks about Lost’s sexual experiences. When Esteves notices, he knocks Manz down and has to answer to his boss. She tells him that, in future, he must bring her in immediately in such situations. If that isn’t possible, he should hit the person somewhere that won’t leave visible marks. The suspected drug smuggler passes the time in a harbor bar, and the supposed drug containers turn out to be harmless. Meanwhile, Toninho has slipped out of hospital unnoticed and is dragging himself toward the salt pan. The police finally locate Zara and her kidnappers in the carpenter’s house and manage to free her; Graciana remains uninjured only thanks to her bulletproof vest. Toninho at the salt pan is also just barely pulled out of the line of fire in time. Lost remembers the carpenter’s construction drawings and finally realizes that the drugs have already entered the country by sea, hidden inside the feet of 333 European pallets, and are now on their way to Spain by truck. The airdrop was only a diversion orchestrated by Delgado. This means Duarte, on his way back from Seville, finally gets to take action after all. He blocks the border bridge with his car to stop the truck carrying the pallets from leaving Portugal. Acting on his own, he goes looking for the truck and gets the vehicle door “in the face” as his colleagues arrive and apprehend the drivers. They dump the cargo onto the road, and the packages fall out of the pallet feet. Lost takes another sample of the powder and then recites the Hamburg telephone directory. Meanwhile, Graciana’s mother, who is waiting for her husband to return, receives a visit from a man claiming to be her husband’s friend. In fact, it is Delgado, released from prison early, who wants revenge on her husband for his arrest. During a phone call, however, she manages to alert Graciana through a trick, and Graciana in turn warns her father. He eventually shoots Delgado with Esteves’ gun just as Lost and Graciana arrive in the kitchen via the roof. To ensure Lost is allowed to stay in Fuseta—and to stop Manz from filing a complaint about being assaulted—his colleagues plant two of the blocks full of drugs on Manz and expose him during a staged luggage inspection. This gets Manz to agree to Lost being given a permanent post in Portugal. Lost feels as if he could float when he learns he can stay...
