Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film begins as a transport becomes stranded in Tröbitz. On board are Simone, a Dutch Jewish woman, and her husband, Izaäk. The prisoners encounter the Red Army, whose soldiers tell them they can find shelter in nearby Tröbitz. The Red Army’s perspective is told through the eyes of Vera, a female soldier. Russian troops have previously wreaked havoc in Tröbitz, killing the mother of Winnie, a German teenager. Winnie is then forced to take in several Jewish survivors from a transport, including Simone and her husband. Vera is also billeted in the house. This initially causes tension between the women, but over time they gradually grow closer. For example, Vera prevents Winnie from being raped by a group of Russian soldiers. Simone and Izaäk try to travel to the Netherlands with several other survivors, but they are stopped because they have to go into quarantine after an outbreak of epidemic typhus. Izaäk dies of the disease. Winnie helps care for the sick. Meanwhile, Vera disobeys an order from the government in Moscow to select all the doctors and scholars among the prisoners so they can be sent to Russia to put their skills to use there. The film ends with the arrival of several American trucks, which the former prisoners use to return to the west. Simone says goodbye as Vera and Winnie watch her go.
