Full plot (contains spoilers)
Evening falls in the village of inventors, and the fly Jaak sends the dog girl Lotte to bed. She looks at the moon and wonders what it might be made of. In the darkness, two creatures sneak through the village and hold a shoe they have brought along up to the feet of the sleeping residents. They find a match at Lotte’s Uncle Klaus’s house: the shoe fits him. In his suitcase, the two find a stone, but lose it when Lotte appears. She has been watching them both from her window. She wakes Uncle Klaus to learn more about the stone. Klaus tells her how he once went hiking with two friends and found a suitcase containing three stones in a cave. He heard many creatures in the cave and fled, losing a shoe as he ran. In the end, each of the friends got a stone. The next morning, Lotte and Klaus accidentally discover that the stone seems to have mechanical powers. They decide to find the other two stones and discover what the stones can really do. The two little men follow them on their journey. First, they visit the first friend, who runs a dance school. He has been unable to enter the room where the stone lies for a long time, because ever since then, the plants in the room have grown wild and turned it into a jungle. But little Lotte manages to retrieve the stone from the room. A singer is thrilled by the stone, and a musician who is in love with her follows Lotte and Klaus, just like the two creatures, hoping to get the stones for himself. Lotte and Klaus go to see the sleeping second friend. Lotte, along with the smaller of the two creatures, enters his dream and learns that the stone is no longer with him, but is with the penguins on Penguin Island. On their way to the boat that is supposed to take them both to the island, Klaus and the larger of the two creatures are infected with a virus that causes salt-statue disease. Both are taken to a hospital. The smaller creature steals the backpack containing the stones and plans to go to the island alone, but Lotte catches up with him. The creature turns out to be a three-eared moon hare named Tik. He tells Lotte that all moon-hare children go on a school trip to Earth once a year. Because Klaus had taken the moonstones, the children and their teachers could no longer travel back to the moon, and have now been waiting for a year for the next full moon and a chance to return. The stones must be together that evening for the journey to begin. Lotte and Tik travel to Penguin Island and manage to get the last stone. Back with the moon hares, the musician briefly manages to steal the stones, but Lotte and Tik get them back in time. Meanwhile, Klaus and Tik’s teacher, Rihv, recover, so the teacher can also make the journey to the moon. When arranged in certain shapes, the three stones form a plant that grows all the way up to the moon and serves as a kind of elevator for the moon hares. Only after all the moon hares have disappeared does Lotte realize that she never asked anyone what the moon is made of.
