Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows Quincy McCall and Monica Wright through four distinct periods. In 1981, they become friends as children, though a game leads to a minor injury and a complicated first kiss. By 1988, they are stars at Crenshaw High School; Quincy is popular and dates another girl while Monica harbors feelings for him. They eventually connect and make love after being accepted to USC. In college, Quincy faces media scrutiny and his father's infidelity, while Monica struggles for playing time, eventually leading to their breakup. By 1993, they are professional players: Monica finds success in Barcelona with the IWBA, while Quincy is a bench player for the Los Angeles Lakers. After Quincy suffers a devastating knee injury, Monica learns he is engaged. Following a confrontation with her mother and a high-stakes one-on-one game where Quincy agrees to call off the wedding if he loses, Quincy realizes he cannot live without Monica. He chooses her, they marry, and have a daughter. Monica eventually plays in the WNBA.
