The story
Alex and Rosie are childhood best friends whose lives become complicated after a night of drinking on Rosie's eighteenth birthday leads to a kiss. The following day, a misunderstanding regarding their feelings causes them to drift into different lives. When Rosie becomes pregnant and Alex moves to the United States to study at Harvard, they remain in each other's lives but are separated by distance and personal choices. As years pass, they navigate relationships with other people while their bond remains a constant, underlying force in their lives, even as they face the challenges of growing up and making difficult decisions about their futures.

Alex and Rosie are childhood best friends who share a kiss on Rosie's 18th birthday. Due to a misunderstanding of Rosie's reaction, they believe they are just friends. Rosie becomes pregnant after a night with Greg and keeps it from Alex before he moves to the US for Harvard. They reconnect years later in Boston, where Rosie discovers Alex's girlfriend is pregnant. Rosie marries Greg in 2009, while Alex's relationship with his girlfriend ends after she is revealed to have a baby that isn't his. After Rosie's father dies, she discovers Greg is cheating and finds a letter from Alex expressing his love. She attends a wedding where she and Alex finally confront their feelings. Alex realizes Rosie never forgot their first kiss. In the end, Rosie opens her own hotel, and Alex joins her as her first guest, and they finally share a kiss.
