The story
Oliver Barrett IV, an upper-class student at Harvard College, meets Jenny Cavilleri, a working-class student at Radcliffe College. Despite their different social backgrounds, the two fall in love while attending a hockey game. As their relationship deepens, they face the challenges of their differing social statuses and the pressures of their respective families. The story follows their journey from the initial spark of romance through the complexities of their courtship and the decisions they must make regarding their future together as they navigate the realities of their lives in the academic environment of the late 1960s.

Oliver Barrett IV, a wealthy student at Harvard, falls in love with Jenny Cavilleri, a working-class student at Radcliffe. They marry despite the disapproval of Oliver's wealthy family. While Oliver pursues a career in law, they struggle to establish their lives together. The narrative takes a tragic turn when Jenny is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Oliver attempts to shield her from the truth, but she eventually discovers her condition. As she nears death, they spend their final days together, and Oliver must confront his father about the truth of Jenny's illness. The film concludes with a poignant final scene at an ice rink, where Oliver reflects on their love with the phrase, 'love means never having to say you're sorry.'
