Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sam Greenfield, an orphaned young woman plagued by misfortune, is forced out of her foster home. After losing a lucky penny, she follows a talking black cat named Bob through a portal to the Land of Luck, where leprechauns create good luck for Earth. Bob needs the penny to avoid banishment, and the two strike a deal to get another from the Penny depot for Sam's friend, Hazel. During their journey, Sam learns how luck is managed and encounters a dragon named Babe, the CEO of Good Luck. After a disaster at the Penny depot leads them to the In-Between—a space managed by a unicorn named Jeff—Sam discovers the mechanics of the Randomizer. After Bob is caught faking his travel penny, Sam sacrifices her own to save him. They eventually attempt to shut down the Bad Luck Apparatus to give Hazel the luck she needs to be adopted, but this causes a catastrophe that threatens both worlds. Sam realizes that both good and bad luck are necessary for balance. She convinces Babe to allow a bad luck stone to be placed, restoring normalcy. Hazel is adopted, and Bob chooses to live on Earth with Sam.
