The writer Ebba is married to hockey player Patrik Svensson. Ebba gives birth to her and Patrik’s daughter at the same time as Patrik wins gold in the Swedish Hockey Championship. Since Patrik is not home, Ebba’s half-brother Rikard goes with her to the hospital instead. Just as Patrik arrives home to his wife and newborn daughter, he tells her he may get the chance to play in the Ice Hockey World Championship, but he is dropped from the team after it comes out that he was arrested for public drunkenness. Since Patrik is never home anyway, Ebba begins to doubt that she is happy with him. Ebba’s half-brother Rikard is a driving instructor. When he accompanies Ebba to the hospital where she gives birth to her and Patrik’s daughter, he meets the midwife Maria. Maria initially thinks Rikard is the baby’s father, so she scolds him for spending two hours watching Patrik’s hockey game with Ebba before they went to the hospital, which resulted in Ebba having to deliver the baby by caesarean section. Later, when Maria runs into Rikard at a pub and learns that he is not the baby’s father after all, she becomes interested in him. When Maria learns that Rikard is a driving instructor, she pretends she does not have a driver’s licence and enrols at the driving school where he works so she can spend time with him, but she does not dare tell him how she feels. Robert Hedman is a taxi driver who takes Ebba and Rikard to the hospital where Ebba gives birth to her and Patrik Svensson’s daughter. Robert had dreams of becoming a photographer, and he used to be in a relationship with the famous actress Sofia Rydell. Robert is now married to Josefin, a police officer and a friend of Ebba’s, and they have a son, John. Sofia is married to Mark, a New York photographer, and has a daughter, Jennifer. Both Robert and Sofia feel that they are not truly happy with their respective partners, so when they run into each other again by pure chance, they begin secretly spending time together. When Robert’s wife Josefin catches him, he travels to New York to find Sofia, and Josefin starts spending time with her ex-boyfriend Tomas Hoffman, a famous songwriter. In addition, Robert’s son John is in love with his classmate Fatima, and Robert has problems with John’s idiotic and excessively demanding football coach, Torkel. Ulf is a retired history teacher and one of Maria’s neighbours. He is single, and his only companion is his dog, Darwin. Ulf meets Claudia, a woman his own age who speaks broken Spanish and runs a dog daycare, and the two fall in love. But what Ulf does not expect at all is that Claudia will turn out to be ill.
