A determined intern tries to turn the wrong Finnish metal band into a competition-ready act and save her shot at a record-company career.
The story
Annika, a long-term intern at GrandMusic, is offered a chance at a permanent job if she can prepare a Finnish boy band called Ripili for a newcomers’ competition in Germany. When the musicians arrive, she discovers they are actually Rypeli, a struggling Finnish death metal band—the result of a misunderstanding with their agent. Since her appointment as a producer depends on winning the competition, Annika refuses to give up. The first rehearsal makes clear that shaping the band into a suitable act will be difficult, although she begins to see promise in the musicians and tries to keep the company’s boss from meeting them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Annika, a long-term intern, gets the chance to land a permanent job at the record company “GrandMusic.” As a trial assignment, she is supposed to prepare the Finnish boy band “Ripili” for a newcomers’ competition in Germany. When the band arrives at the airport, Annika realizes that they are actually the third-rate Finnish death metal band “Rypeli”: she had misunderstood the Finnish agent on the phone. But Annika can’t and won’t give up on the band, because her appointment as a producer depends on winning the competition. At the first rehearsal, it quickly becomes clear that getting the band ready for the competition will be very difficult. But the guys also have their “good” sides—Annika understands what the agent meant when he called them “rough diamonds.” She consistently thwarts every attempt by the record company’s boss to meet the Finnish musicians. After some back and forth, the band members learn to play together. But then an argument breaks out because Matti, the band’s singer, becomes short of breath and can’t sing. He had failed at a talent show before for the same reason. Annika takes Matti straight to the doctor, who diagnoses him with asthma. The bassist is promptly appointed the new singer. Matti and Annika fall in love. The band makes great progress, changes its style in the direction of hard rock, and has a chance at the competition; Matti learns to manage his asthma. But at an in-house company presentation, it comes out that Annika arranged for the wrong band. She is fired, and “Rypeli” has to fly back to Finland. Annika still doesn’t give up and finds out whether they might be able to take part in the competition anyway. The requirement is a record label with either a certain amount of capital or at least ten years in the music business. The friend whose studio she and “Rypeli” have been using for rehearsals has been in the business long enough, so they found a record label together and bring the Finns back to Germany. The band is allowed to enter the competition. Shortly before it begins, Matti decides to sing the song himself, and the band wins. Paula, Annika’s older sister, who has quit her job at a cosmetics company, is dating Erkki, Rypeli’s bassist, and joins Annika—who is now with Matti—on “tour.”
