Full plot (contains spoilers)
A bleak, restless small town in the industrial wasteland of Kyrgyzstan. Plagued by boredom, confusion, and sex—all the usual torments of adolescence. Seventeen-year-old “Chimp” (so called because of his ears) and his friends pass the time fighting, partying, and working at the iron-ore factory before they have to do their military service. “Chimp” has more than enough problems: he experiences unrequited love for a former classmate. His platonic feelings for the boy his own age are overshadowed by his sense of his own ugliness. He is enchanted by the femininity of a switchman, but does not dare protect her from the boorishness of the drunken workers in his brigade; his sexual maturity demands to be fulfilled, but he is humiliated by the crude erotic game of a local prostitute. His father is a self-loathing chronic alcoholic, and his long-suffering mother has had enough. She leaves him, taking “Chimp’s” little sister with her.
