The story
Set after the events of the first film, the story follows Donna Sheridan, whose daughter Sophie is preparing for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna on the Greek island of Kalokairi. As a storm cuts off the island from the mainland, Sophie's friends and family gather, leading to a series of musical performances and reunions. The narrative weaves between the present and 1979, revealing the history of Donna's life and her relationships with three different men, while the current events mirror the past in a series of musical numbers and emotional moments.

In 1979, Donna Sheridan graduates from Oxford and travels to the Greek island of Kalokairi to find her destiny, where she eventually falls in love and has a child. In the present, her daughter Sophie is preparing the reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna. A storm strands Sophie's friends and family on the island. The film alternates between the present and 1979, showing Donna's past romances with Bill, Harry, and Sam. In the present, the men from Donna's past arrive to support Sophie. The celebration is interrupted by the arrival of Donna's mother, Ruby, who seeks to bond with her granddaughter. The story concludes with a final celebration where Sophie gives birth to a son, and Donna's spirit is seen watching over them before finally passing on.
