Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nicola and Valeria are a couple living in Treviso. They have a beautiful home, excellent jobs, and three children, but after fifteen years of marriage they realize they are no longer in love with each other and decide to divorce amicably. After reaching an agreement on their separation, they both receive an enticing job offer abroad, but they do not know what to do about the children. Valeria initially agrees to stay at home; however, when she discovers that her husband is having an affair with a young nurse, she is no longer willing to sacrifice her own career. A bitter battle between the two begins, with each trying to avoid being awarded sole custody of the children. Each of them comes up with a series of strategies to make themselves unbearable to their three children, pushing them to ask to live with the other parent. The pranks they play on each other grow increasingly violent, leading Nicola to break up with his mistress and Valeria to reject her boss’s advances. The battle reaches its climax at their youngest son’s birthday party, where the two parents first drive all the guests away, then end up beating each other in a brawl. Afterwards, they discover that they are still in love and have sex. Meanwhile, fed up with the pranks and arguments, the children try to run away. While Nicola and Valeria go to get them back, their home catches fire because of the mess their hamster has made, prompting the children to say that getting divorced is the best thing to do. The two then sign the papers for joint custody. Seven months later, Nicola returns from Mali and is greeted at the airport by the three children, who have meanwhile been in Sweden with Valeria. The woman is pregnant with a girl conceived on the night of the fire. The two eventually get back together.
