Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 17th-century Italy, a group of Franciscan friars rescues a newborn from the ruins of a besieged castle. After establishing that no one in the village wants to adopt him, the Prior decides that they will take care of him themselves. The child is named Marcellino, and as he grows up among the friars, he learns to read and write. After an unusual dream, the boy becomes “friends” with the statue of Christ on the cross.
