The story

After working for a year as a cook for real estate agent Siegfried Ohrmann, Marga Engel discovers that he is cheating on his wife, Nele, with his assistant. Marga quits, insisting she will cook only for honest people, and must find a new place to live after leaving the Ohrmanns’ home. She happens upon a vacant old inn and sees a chance to realize her ambition of owning one. Nele, who has also left her husband’s house, could make a new home there with her. But Marga’s plan faces opposition from Ohrmann, who needs the property for a construction project.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The cook Marga Engel has now been working for real estate agent Siegfried Ohrmann for a year. He once cheated her out of the house she had built. Although she can’t stand her new boss, she cooks for him as well as she can. But when she discovers that Ohrmann is cheating on his wife, Nele, with his assistant, Sybille Gronius, she quits her job. She argues that she is an honest woman and therefore would cook only for honest people. Her straightforwardness now also means that she has to find somewhere new to live, since she had been living with the Ohrmanns. By chance, Marga Engel comes across a vacant old inn. At last, she could make her dream of owning her own inn come true, where she would be the one in charge. It could also become a new home for her and Nele Ohrmann, who has likewise left her husband’s house. But her opponent is none other than Siegfried Ohrmann, who needs the space for his latest construction project and wants the old inn demolished for it. Marga Engel, however, has no idea about any of this and soon celebrates the inn’s reopening. When Ohrmann tells her of his plans, she fears that, just as he did with her house before, he won’t give up until he gets what he wants. She may be right: Ohrmann’s first despicable move is to make an anonymous call to the municipal public-order office, which is supposed to inspect the supposedly filthy kitchen. To that end, he buys worms, cockroaches, and other revolting vermin from a pet shop. To make matters worse, Ohrmann has the excavators brought in, too, but Frau Engel comes up with the right idea for a counterattack: she has old pottery scattered across the construction site, bringing work to an immediate halt. After more minor intrigues between the two adversaries, Ohrmann’s major contract falls through, and he has to realize that he has lost much more than his current contract and is now, in effect, all alone. He regrets what he has done and hopes that his wife will forgive him too and come back to him.
