Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jost’s wife, Maria, recently died from an illness. While sorting through her belongings, he and his son come across an electronic correspondence saved on Maria’s laptop between his wife and a stranger named Anni. The subject line of every email between the two women is “Maria to Callas,” a reference to their shared admiration for the singer Maria Callas. Jost decides to continue the correspondence and assume his late wife’s online identity without telling Anni. This is how he learns that Anni also suffered a similar loss a few years earlier. He sets out and checks into the small hotel Anni runs. Anni still does not know that Jost is the person she believes to be Maria, with whom she communicates almost every day. After some time, Jost and Anni fall in love, as confirmed by Anni’s emails to his late wife, Maria. Only later does he realize how wrong it was of him to spy on Anni through the emails and use the information to his advantage. Jost leaves again, and Anni cuts off all contact with him. But they both realize that they belong together, and that their feelings did not arise because of their correspondence. While Jost attends an opera, Anni is on her way to his house and looks around there. Jost leaves the performance early because he cannot escape his feelings for Anni or the memory of his late wife. But when he arrives home, all he finds is Anni’s scarf; she is already on her way back. Jost returns to the place where they met and fell in love. They meet again on a staircase by the beach.
