While Jenny finds success at her paper, John struggles with mundane assignments until he discovers that documenting Marley's unruly behavior and various misadventures provides him with a unique and popular column. Full plot (contains spoilers)

After moving to Florida, John and Jenny Grogan adopt a Labrador puppy named Marley. As Marley grows into a 100-pound dog, his unruly behavior leads to a popular column for John. The couple faces personal hardships, including a miscarriage and a subsequent pregnancy with a boy named Patrick, followed by a second son, Conor. They move to a larger home in Boca Raton. Over the years, Marley becomes a central part of their lives, even as the couple faces the stresses of parenting. Eventually, the family moves to a farm in Pennsylvania. The story concludes with the aging Marley suffering a fatal illness; he is euthanized with John by his side, and the family buries him in their front yard.
