The story
In 1952 New York City, Marty Mauser is a shoe salesman who dreams of bringing international attention to the sport of table tennis. While juggling a secret romance and a business venture involving novelty table tennis balls, Marty faces a crisis when his uncle refuses to fund his trip to the British Open. Desperate to secure his future, Marty takes a drastic step by robbing his uncle's shop vault. This act of desperation sets off a chain of events as he travels to London, where he must navigate the complexities of the professional sports circuit and his own ambitious, often reckless, personal life.

In 1952 New York, Marty Mauser, a shoe salesman and aspiring table tennis champion, robs his uncle's shop to fund a trip to the British Open in London. While in London, he stays at the Ritz, seduces a former actress, and competes in the tournament, ultimately losing the final to a Japanese player. He then performs as a novelty act for the Harlem Globetrotters. Back in New York, he is caught in a web of complications: he is accused of fraud regarding his hotel stay, his mistress is pregnant, and he becomes entangled with a local mobster. After a series of mishaps involving a stolen necklace, a missing dog, and a fraudulent business deal, Marty eventually travels to Tokyo for a high-stakes exhibition match. After a series of humiliations and a final, grueling match, he wins a legitimate title and returns home to find his lover and a newborn child.
