Two rival queens navigate a dangerous political landscape of marriage, betrayal, and survival in 16th-century Europe.

The story

In 1561, following the death of her husband King Francis II, nineteen-year-old Mary Stuart returns to Scotland to claim her throne. Her presence poses a direct threat to her cousin, the Protestant Queen of England, Elizabeth Tudor. As the two women navigate the complexities of their shared lineage and the religious tensions of the era, Elizabeth attempts to neutralize Mary's claim through strategic marriages. Amidst a landscape of shifting alliances and religious conflict, the two queens are forced into a high-stakes game of political maneuvering where personal feelings and national survival are constantly at odds.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1561, nineteen-year-old Mary Stuart returns to Scotland to claim her throne, sparking a crisis for her cousin, the English Queen Elizabeth I. To neutralize Mary's claim, Elizabeth arranges for her to marry Lord Robert Dudley's friend, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. The marriage creates a constitutional crisis as both kingdoms fear the implications of a Stuart heir. After a series of betrayals, including the murder of Mary's confidant David Rizzio and the death of Darnley, Mary is forced into a desperate situation. Following a forced marriage to the Earl of Bothwell and a subsequent demand for her abdication, she flees to England. There, she is placed under house arrest. Despite a clandestine meeting where she seeks Elizabeth's help, the two queens remain at odds. Ultimately, Elizabeth orders Mary's execution. The film concludes with a textual epilogue noting that Elizabeth remained unmarried while James became the first monarch to rule both Scotland and England upon her death.
