During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate's captain and his ship's surgeon must navigate the perils of the sea and the mysteries of the Galápagos Islands.
The story
In April 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, the British frigate HMS Surprise is ambushed by the French privateer Acheron off Brazil. After sustaining heavy damage and escaping into a fog bank, Captain Jack Aubrey refuses to return to land, insisting on repairs at sea. The ship is soon ambushed again, and the crew begins a pursuit of the privateer toward the Galápagos Islands. Aubrey had promised the ship's surgeon, Stephen Maturin, time to explore the islands' unique flora and fauna, but the ongoing naval conflict and the discovery of survivors from a nearby ship force the captain to prioritize the hunt for the enemy vessel.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After being ambushed by the French privateer Acheron, the HMS Surprise pursues the vessel toward the Galápagos Islands. During the voyage, the crew faces hardships, including a 'Jonah' who commits suicide and the surgeon, Maturin, being shot in the stomach. Aubrey eventually allows Maturin to perform self-surgery and briefly explore the islands. However, Maturin discovers the Acheron on the other side of the islands. Aubrey then disguises the Surprise as a whaler to ambush the French ship. After a fierce battle, they capture the Acheron. The film concludes with a tense realization that the French surgeon, de Vigny, was actually the captain in disguise, leading to a final pursuit of the enemy ship.
