Full plot (contains spoilers)
Matula intends to travel to Italy, but a breakdown in his rickety minibus forces him to make an involuntary stop at a winter sports resort, where the locals seem oddly secretive. In a pub, he witnesses an argument between two villagers. The next morning, while hiking with his companion, the dog “Dr. Renz,” he discovers the body of one of the two men. At first, it appears that the dead man, butcher Martin Wiesner, died in a climbing accident of his own making, but Matula soon begins to doubt this theory. He secretly starts investigating with local police officers Janosch Grebe and Valentin Leipold. Grebe, however, quickly presents him with facts that are supposed to prove Wiesner actually died by suicide. But Matula also finds this evidence dubious. As a result, the villagers begin to look at Matula with suspicion. It then comes to light that a family disliked in the village died when their home on the mountain pasture was set on fire, and that the incident was dismissed as a smoldering fire. As the village conspires against him, Matula finds himself in grave danger. With help from Leipold, who knew nothing of the conspiracy because he had been abroad and now wants to expose it, Matula is rescued and the arson is uncovered.
