The story
In the remote Bulgarian mountain village of Pirin, nature is gradually reclaiming homes left behind as traditions fade and the population dwindles, with most residents elderly. The film follows three of the few who remain. Maria, a widow sharing one room with her over-40 son, dreams of becoming a grandmother. Iliya, a shepherd, roams the mountains with his animals, away from civilization. Mayor Georgi hopes to find a wife online, but his central ambition is to make Pirin a tourist attraction. He plans to build that appeal around Gincho, a dragon from local legend said to shape the village’s good and bad fortune.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the remote Bulgarian mountain village of Pirin, nature is gradually reclaiming all the houses abandoned by their former residents. Traditions practiced for centuries are being lost, hardly anyone lives there anymore, and almost all of them are elderly. The film portrays three of the few who have stayed: Maria, a widow, lives in one room with her son, who is over 40, and dreams of having grandchildren. Iliya, the shepherd, wanders through the mountains with his animals, far from civilization. Mayor Georgi wants to find a wife on the internet, but above all he wants to turn Pirin into a tourist attraction. To do so, he plans to use the dragon Gincho, who, according to legend, is responsible for the village’s good and bad fortune. The myth lives on even as Pirin is dying: it is the last European village with a dragon.
