Charlie Baileygates, a meek Rhode Island state trooper, develops a split personality named 'Hank' to cope with the mistreatment he faces from others, including his wife. While on duty, he is ordered to escort Irene Waters, who is being hunted by her mob-connected ex-boyfriend, Dickie. After a series of events leads to them being on the run, they travel toward Rhode Island. Along the way, they encounter a man named Whitey. During the journey, Hank's aggressive personality causes complications. Eventually, they reach a train where Dickie kidnaps Irene. Charlie and Hank work together to save her. In a final confrontation on a bridge, Charlie faces his fears, permanently nullifying Hank's personality. Dickie is killed by Whitey, and Charlie is hailed as a hero, receiving a promotion.
