Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mea Harper, a Chicago defense attorney, takes on the case of Zyair Malloy, an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, Hydie. While Mea's family—including her husband Kal and his mother Azalia—oppose the move to protect their reputation, Mea suspects the prosecution is a career move by Ray Hawthorne. As Mea investigates, she discovers Zyair's manipulative behavior and a mutual attraction between them. After a series of betrayals, including discovering Kal's infidelity and Zyair's pattern of seduction, Mea eventually learns that Azalia's cancer is a lie to facilitate Ray's mayoral run. The situation turns violent when Charlise, Ray's wife, is ordered to stab Mea but kills Azalia instead. Mea escapes Ray but realizes Kal is also complicit in the family's schemes. She intentionally steers their car into a tractor trailer to escape. In the aftermath, Ray is arrested while Zyair is released following an anonymous email.
