The story
Seventeen-year-old Lena from Weimar is nearing the end of secondary school, but she resists being pushed toward a future she cannot yet imagine. Her father has been out of work for years and does not look for a new job; his silence weighs on Lena and her mother, whose own job pays less than her previous one. When her father asks what she wants to become, Lena says she does not know. At a concert, she sees a drummer play with fierce energy and decides she wants to learn the drums. She and her friends Alex and Klara have long wanted to form a rock band, though none can play an instrument.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Seventeen-year-old Lena from Weimar is going through a deep period of self-discovery and indecision just before completing her secondary-school diploma: she refuses to do anything she does not want to do, but does not know what she really wants either. Her father, Friedrich, a trained bridge engineer, lost his job a few years ago. Her mother, Karla—also an engineer—has a job, but it pays less than her previous one. Both mother and daughter suffer from the indifference of the silent father, who cannot bring himself to look for a new job. The oppressive silence at home is often broken only by Friedrich asking his daughter what she wants to be when she grows up. Lena always replies that she does not know yet and does not want to be pushed into anything. At a concert, Lena sees a drummer playing her instrument like a wild woman. After that, Lena knows what she wants to do: learn to play the drums. Her two friends, Alex and Klara, and Lena have long wanted to start a rock band, but none of them can play an instrument. Driven by her wish to become a drummer, Lena manages to sneak into the conservatory, where she meets an instructor who recognizes her talent and encourages her.
