A former supervillain turned hero must team up with his old friend to stop a group of villains from launching the city into space.

The story

Two days after the events of the previous film, Megamind has assumed the role of Metro City's defender. Alongside his friend Ol' Chum, he successfully stops a criminal trio, earning him the key to the city. However, his new status is challenged when the Doom Syndicate—a team of supervillains he once belonged to—breaks out of prison. Believing Megamind's heroism is a ruse, they embark on a crime spree and challenge him to prove his villainy by robbing a bank. Megamind must navigate his new identity while dealing with the demands of his former allies.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Following the events of the first film, Megamind becomes Metro City's protector. After stopping the Go-Fish gang, he is gifted the city's key, but his friend Ol' Chum feels undervalued and seeks to be a sidekick. The Doom Syndicate, believing Megamind is secretly still evil, breaks out of prison and demands he rob a bank. With help from his fan Keiko Morita, Megamind stages a fake robbery. He then tricks the Syndicate into attempting to launch the city into the moon using old rockets. When the Syndicate prepares to launch, Megamind realizes he needs help and tries to recruit Chum, but eventually lets him go. Overpowered by the Syndicate, Megamind is comforted by Roxanne and Keiko, who encourage him to ask for help. Chum returns, and the group—including Keiko—devise a plan to stop the launch. While Megamind and Roxanne fight the Syndicate, Chum manages to terminate the launch. The city falls at a dangerous rate, but Megamind leads the villains to a construction site where he defeats them one by one. The crew redirects the city safely back to Earth. Roxanne is elected Mayor, and Megamind feels accomplished with his new team. In a mid-credits scene, the Syndicate is returned to prison and visited by Machiavillain.
