The story
Eleven-year-old Dole meets Hermann, a man in his mid-forties, during a vacation by the sea. They get along very well, and their relationship grows beyond friendship, continuing after the holiday ends. Neither family understands their closeness, and eventually both families insist that they end contact. The account describes this bond and the strain it creates between the adults and the two young-at-heart companions, setting up a conflict over whether they can continue seeing one another.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Eleven-year-old Dole meets Hermann, a man in his mid-forties, while on vacation by the sea. The two get along very well, and their relationship develops into more than a friendship, continuing even after the vacation is over. Neither of their families understands, until both families eventually insist that the two end their contact. One day, however, Dole shows up at Hermann’s door and “kidnaps” him on a trip that ends for them where it began: by the sea. As they search for the two of them, witnesses tell Hermann’s wife, Margot, and Dole’s mother, Franziska, extraordinary stories.
