A forensic biologist’s guarded life is unsettled by a possible half-sister and the arrival of a young falcon.
The story
Since her divorce two years earlier, forensic biologist Inga Ehrenberg has buried herself in work, even spending weekends at Wolfsburg’s forensic medicine institute. Her cases include establishing when an infant found dead in the woods died and investigating inconsistencies in the apparent swimming-accident death of an elderly man. When her father’s neighbor dies, his harsh accusation that Inga neglects him leads to a family revelation: he has told the deceased woman’s daughter, Charlotte, that he may be her biological father. Charlotte hopes to know Inga, but Inga resists the possibility that they are half-sisters. Then a falconer from Inga’s past asks her to care for a young falcon, stirring feelings she has kept suppressed.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Since her divorce two years ago, Inga Ehrenberg has thrown herself into her work. The forensic biologist even spends her weekends at Wolfsburg’s forensic medicine institute. Among other things, she is working to narrow down the time of death of an infant found dead in the woods and to clear up inconsistencies surrounding the death of an elderly man who is said to have had a swimming accident. When her father’s neighbor dies, he reacts harshly and accuses Inga of not taking enough care of him. But it is only when Charlotte, the deceased neighbor’s daughter, turns up at Inga’s that she understands why the death has affected her father so deeply. He has told Charlotte that he might be her biological father—which would make Charlotte Inga’s half-sister. But Inga cannot, or will not, believe it, especially since her supposed half-sister also wants to get to know her better. The idea does not appeal to the biologist at all. The situation becomes even more complicated when a falconer whom Inga knows from her marriage asks her to look after a young falcon. This plunges her into a whirlpool of suppressed feelings. With devotion and persistence, she tries to tame the little falcon, firmly convinced that it will never leave her. In the end, it is the falcon that brings about a change in Inga.
