Sabine’s eagerly anticipated year in Bangkok soon becomes a test of adapting to a hectic new life while her husband is absorbed in work.

The story

Sabine Kremer is excited that her husband, successful business consultant Christof, is supposed to live in Bangkok for a year, a city she loves. The move quickly proves less welcoming than she imagined: her luggage goes missing, the driver is late, and the promised colonial-style townhouse is still a construction site. With Christof overwhelmed by work, Sabine is left to handle the hectic situation largely alone. Their daughter Emma, by contrast, enjoys the unfamiliar surroundings and the change of scene. At his company, Christof struggles to communicate because all the employees speak only Thai, while his German contact fears for his job and sabotages his plans.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sabine Kremer is thrilled. Her husband, Christof, is a successful business consultant and is supposed to live in Bangkok for a year. As a fan of the Thai metropolis, she can hardly wait. But her excitement soon gives way to the sobering reality. To begin with, all of her luggage goes missing, the driver is late, and the promised townhouse in an elegant colonial style is a construction site. Sabine is left to cope with the hectic chaos on her own, since her husband is swamped with work. Their daughter Emma, on the other hand, loves the unfamiliar surroundings and enjoys the change of scene. Sabine, too, gradually makes contact with the locals. She befriends Lilly, a Chinese woman who is the mother of one of Emma’s classmates. Through Lilly, Sabine learns more about the country’s cultural idiosyncrasies. Christof, meanwhile, has entirely different problems. He cannot communicate with his company. All the employees speak only Thai. And his German contact, Jochen Zimmermann, is afraid for his job, so he sabotages all of Christof’s plans. His situation improves only when he hires Eleanor, a beautiful Thai woman, as his personal interpreter. But Sabine quickly notices that Eleanor flirts very openly with her husband, which she absolutely dislikes. When Christof and Eleanor then go on a business trip lasting several days, Eleanor sees her chance. Meanwhile, Sabine tries to fend off Christof’s client, Herbert Dollmann, who has developed a crush on her.
