The story
Dr. Lena Seidel, a lawyer and career woman in Berlin, hopes to get engaged to successful attorney Markus Immel. Her employer at the Federal Ministry of Transport instead sends her to Hilleritz, an East German wine-growing village, to persuade its municipal council to approve a motorway connection. Council chairman Gottfried Vogt shows Lena the surrounding countryside and introduces her to his son, Steffen. As Lena becomes captivated by the region and grows closer to Steffen, she must reckon with the village’s opposition to the proposed road and the purpose of her assignment.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The lawyer and career woman Dr. Lena Seidel wants to get engaged to the successful attorney Markus Immel, but her employer, Ministerial Director Grabow of the Federal Ministry of Transport in Berlin, sends her to the East German wine-growing village of Hilleritz. There, Seidel is supposed to persuade the municipal council to approve a motorway connection. The council chairman, Gottfried Vogt, shows the lawyer the idyllic East German countryside and introduces her to his son, Steffen. Seidel then falls in love both with the region between the Saale and Unstrut rivers and with the council chairman’s son, and arranges for the village to be declared a nature reserve because of an endangered bird species. This prevents the village from getting the motorway connection, which its residents oppose. Finally, Seidel changes employers and takes a job at the European Ministry for Environmental Protection in the Berlaymont Building in Brussels, where her new boyfriend, Steffen Vogt, visits her in his tractor.
