The story
A woman nearing midlife struggles with family pressures as her mother’s health declines and her marriage comes under strain.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Helen, a housewife and mother, begins to feel that she is slowly getting old. At the hairdresser’s, conversations are now only about cellulite and waist measurements, and she also suspects that her husband has started an affair with a younger woman. The situation becomes even more difficult when her mother begins to show early signs of dementia and no longer recognizes her daughter. When her mother also suffers a stroke and Helen has to take care of her, Helen is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The film explores the daily life of a typical member of the sandwich generation—that is, people aged 40 to 60 who have sick parents and nearly grown-up children.
