After a hit-and-run leaves a woman with amnesia, her husband tries to rebuild their life while helping find the driver.

The story

Visiting nurse Maria Hofer is struck by a speeding car as she leaves a Viennese coffeehouse. The driver flees, and Maria falls into a coma. When she wakes, retrograde amnesia has erased her memory of the crash, her identity, and her husband, public prosecutor Bruno, and their children. Bruno tries to help her return to family life while investigating the hit-and-run with his friend, Detective Inspector Freddy Turek. The sole witness, Vienna State Opera conductor Lukas Horvath, offers little help and hides his connection to Maria. Investigators trace the car to influential contractor Toni Lorant and his wife, Gloria, but the account of who was driving is disputed.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The visiting nurse Maria Hofer is seriously injured when a car speeding toward her hits her as she leaves a Viennese coffeehouse. The driver flees the scene, and Maria falls into a coma. After she wakes up, she suffers from retrograde amnesia: she cannot remember the accident itself, her own name, or her husband, public prosecutor Bruno Hofer, and their two children, Lucy and Joey. Bruno tries to help Maria return to her former life and, with the support of his friend, Detective Inspector Freddy Turek, track down the driver. The only witness to the incident is Lukas Horvath, a conductor at the Vienna State Opera. His testimony is of little use, however, and he conceals the fact that he had arranged to meet Maria, his lover, at the coffeehouse. The vehicle involved is traced to its owners, influential construction contractor Toni Lorant and his wife, Gloria. Lorant had reported the car stolen, however. Gloria tells Freddy Turek that she was driving. In fact, her husband was behind the wheel. At an identification lineup, Lukas Horvath says he did not recognize the driver. In return, Toni Lorant later offers him financial support after Horvath’s contract renewal is put in jeopardy by financial irregularities. Turek discovers that Toni Lorant and Lukas Horvath already knew each other before the lineup, but Horvath continues to claim that he did not recognize the driver. During his investigation, Bruno discovers that Horvath was not at the scene of the accident by chance. A review of Maria’s phone records from before the accident reveals that she and Horvath had been in frequent contact and had been having an affair for two months. Bruno tries to save their family life and their marriage, which had already been in crisis before the accident. After Maria and Bruno gradually grow closer again through shared memories, Maria suddenly collapses and dies from a blood clot in her brain. Gloria Lorant eventually confesses to Bruno Hofer that her husband caused the accident and says she is willing to testify against him.
