A couple hoping for a quiet wedding must navigate clashing family expectations and an increasingly chaotic run-up to the ceremony.

The story

Country inn owner Antonia “Toni” Janssen and Michelin-starred chef Rufus van Berg are planning a small, simple wedding. Toni’s mother instead expects a celebration for at least 200 guests and has already sent invitations, setting mother and daughter at odds. Rufus faces further complications: Toni’s ex, HaJü, insists on arranging his bachelor party and serving as best man. The tension rises when Rufus’s parents visit to meet their future daughter-in-law. His mother, Luise, disapproves of Toni’s work as a country innkeeper, while her own marriage is strained by her husband’s flirtations. As the wedding approaches, Luise tries to derail the plans, leaving the family to contend with escalating conflict.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Country inn owner Antonia “Toni” Janssen and Michelin-starred chef Rufus van Berg are about to get married. The two want to say “I do” without much fuss, but Toni’s mother believes her only daughter’s wedding should be celebrated on a grand scale. She is expecting at least 200 people and has already sent out invitations, causing friction between mother and daughter. But groom Rufus has worries of his own: Toni’s no-good “ex,” HaJü, is determined to organize his bachelor party and be best man for the couple. Shortly before the wedding, Rufus’s parents want to meet their future daughter-in-law. Their visit turns into a disaster, because Rufus’s mother makes no secret of the fact that she had imagined someone other than a country innkeeper as a wife for her son. Accordingly, Luise van Berg finds fault with everything and nags about it all, including her husband. The two have been in a kind of ongoing crisis for a long time, since he can’t stop flirting with other women. As part of her plan to prevent the wedding, Luise tries to recruit HaJü, but he flatly refuses. When Rufus notices the tension between his parents, he talks to his father and persuades him to cook a meal with him for Luise, hoping it will put her in a conciliatory mood. But Rufus’s mother remains stubborn and refuses to come to the wedding. The mood at the country inn is correspondingly subdued; after all, Toni, her mother, and Rufus have tried everything. Despite everything, the wedding is still set to take place four weeks later. Unexpectedly, Rufus’s parents do show up. His mother seems like a different person and even apologizes to Toni, which makes Toni suspicious. After the bachelor party is over, the big day arrives. Everyone is in high spirits, except HaJü, who is acting strangely. He had secretly tried on the wedding ring Rufus had entrusted to him as best man. Now he can’t get it off his finger, and in the end he has to confess this to the groom. But that alone can’t stop the wedding; Rufus’s mother takes care of that herself, starting a wild brawl in the church that eventually draws in all the wedding guests. Toni’s mother then gives Luise a thorough telling-off and takes her to the bus stop so she can go straight home. Meanwhile, Toni and Rufus still say “I do,” alone together, outside the church.
