The story
Linda, now 30, was born with a serious heart defect and was expected to live only three months. Before undergoing another operation, she decides to spend time with her sisters, Katharina and Clara. The eldest, Katharina, is strict, married and raising three children; Clara, the youngest, is studying in Hamburg. The sisters persuade Katharina to join them at their old holiday home in Tating on the North Sea. Their time together is complicated by Clara’s longstanding sense that Linda and Katharina are closer to each other, while Linda shares a painful revelation about her marriage.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with two orderlies wheeling a dead woman through a hospital to the morgue. In the background, Linda (Jördis Triebel) tells her story: she was born with a serious heart defect and was expected to live only three months; now she is 30 years old. Before another operation, she decides to spend some more time with her sisters, Katharina (Nina Kunzendorf) and Clara (Lisa Hagmeister). Katharina is strict, married, and the eldest, with three children. Linda is ill, emotional, and also married, while Clara, the young, naive youngest sister, is studying in Hamburg. Linda and Clara persuade Katharina to go with them to their old holiday home in Tating on the North Sea. They spend the day at the beach, but Clara is hurt because, just as in their childhood, she feels excluded from Linda and Katharina, who are much closer to each other. Linda confesses to Katharina that her husband is cheating on her. At an impromptu night out at a disco with old acquaintances, Katharina kisses an old friend, and Clara tells Linda that she has been feeling unwell for some time and has stopped going to university. Katharina wants to leave, which escalates into an argument between her and Linda. They make up and go for a walk. After Linda suddenly collapses, the sisters spontaneously decide to drive to Paris. Linda’s condition worsens there too, leading to another argument among the three sisters. During a visit to their aunt in Paris, Clara admits that she wants to study art in Paris, while Linda tells her uncle that she no longer wants the operation; the two share a kiss. Linda then leaves the family and spends the night in Paris with a stranger, until she collapses again and is eventually found. In the end, the sisters return to Hamburg. Linda signs up for the operation, and their shared fear for Linda brings the previously distant sisters, Katharina and Clara, closer together.
